Bullocks 2011 Internship begins!

Bullocks in early April, main garden zone 2.

April 1st was the official start date although most had already been here jumping into preparation for Spring. We have five new interns and it looks like the men will be outnumbered by two.....at least within the intern community. Another change is that we are no longer "interns" for various reasons, and our new title is Bliss Rangers.

The bliss ranger tumblr link is below

We spend much of our time in the greenhouse where the kitchen has moved in for the winter. Its quite a crowded space since the greenhouse serves as a plant propagation area, storage, kitchen, living, dining room, sauna, shower room, and drying room. Theres no privacy but we are blessed with a sauna. It makes a big difference when you are roughing it in the North West.

It seems like we have a much more techno-savvy crew, and perhaps that has been an increasing trend on the farm. It is not uncommon to see various people in the greenhouse on their laptops and iPhones connecting to the outside world. I also get the sense that our bliss ranger population is less fringe backwoods hippie types and more alternative-mainstream hipster types. I don't really know what that means, but now that it is on the blog it must be true! I'm sure most of the mainstream would probably continue to call us hippies.....or as one boycalled us last year, "slaves":)

Meditation.
Another interesting characteristic about this group is that we have a nice size sangha of serious meditators. As you can see to the left there are five sitting meditation sites almost always set up. Four of the meditators have done the intense Vipassna 10 day retreat, and one is a fellow Deer Park meditator. James has been holding it down with two sits daily since last year. He now plays Goenka from his iPhone as he meditates.

I must say, these bliss rangers are a nerdy bunch of people. People who like to talk about plants, veggies, fruits, and nuts all day. They have dramatic foodgasms when they take a bite of freshly picked produce. Other interesting characteristics include diligent oral hygiene (practice and conversations), internal product-marketing, sobriety (hardly any alcohol consumption), quite a bit of flatulence, laughing, and non-stop eating. In all seriousness, I would say this is the highest concentration of weirdos I have ever been around. Its quite lovely.

Our scheduled work days are Friday to Monday, and on Sundays we have a potluck for anybody who wants to come and share food with us. Guests come between Friday and Monday and join in on our projects for that week. On the other days, people continue projects, do personal projects, eat, work, eat, hangout, and eat. My bet is that we spend most of our time eating, preparing food, and talking about food. We love food, its what we do best.

Here are some pictures from this past week.

Case in point
The spontaneous indulgence commences.
Michael bakes up some late-nite chocolate chip cookies as the bliss rangers gorge and wash it down with fresh raw milk straight out of the gallon jar.
I think Simon ate a dozen.

Dry Season Zone 1
This will be our zone 1 (permaculture term) for most of our season.
To the back is the outdoor kitchen, which is currently dormant.
To the right of that is the cob oven.

Knotting with Nico
(http://www.westmarine.com/boatsafe/knots_bowline.htm) ->
Here Nico teaches four dudes (incl me) how to tie a bowline knot,
which we used to anchor the Aloha Lodge with.

Aloha Lodge erection
drum roll.......

ta da~!

The Aloha Lodge in all its glory.
Instant dry work & play space in just a few hours
Doug was telling us that some old guy in Hawaii used to make them.

What else happened....

Every Sunday we concentrate our positive vibrations into the nursery.
Here we are dewinterising and reorganising the potted plants.

Pruning 剪定
No shortage of pruning to be done.
The pruned off branches get bundled and added to our chinampas.

Grafting
Grafting both potted plants and non-potted trees around the property.
You can restart a tree like the picture on the right,
I believe this apple tree showed symptoms of anthracnos.
*these pictures are from last year but they are still fresh

Cob Oven Repair
Our pizza oven was falling apart so Sid, a cobbing British chap with a fetish for wool,
repaired it with a few bliss rangers.

Typical Permies
Here the special boys and girls mix the dug up clay and sand.
This is the middle layer of the oven and we were doing a one to one mix.
The clay and sand were already moist so we added no water, and mixed each batch for quite a bit of time before filling in the cracks of the oven.
Any chance to take some layers off is not missed here.

Getting dirty (sh*tty)
Here we are mixing steer manure, clay, sand, and water for the outer cob layer.
Sid kept adding each ingredient little by little, feeling the mix with his feet as we mixed it.
I believe the steer manure helps develop a water repellant quality to the cob and the well digested hay adds fine fibers that act like rebar in concrete.

Voila! 完成!
Yes, cob is awesome.
Yes, you need a cob oven.
Yes, we will be having a bunch of fresh pizza during the season!
